White Sox Killer B Podcast 9: Babe Ruth Could Have Kicked Juice Balls

Join the Killer B’s to welcome a special guest Maximum bay in episode 9. While Max is part of Dodgers Nation, he has been adopted by some in the Chicago White Sox community and beyond for his baseball modeling and statistical analysis. He helped FanGraphs and recently developed the Stuff + template with Eno Sarris.

Tune in to this episode, as Max and the B’s discuss some of the latest hot topics for the Chicago White Sox and baseball in general:

  • Yasmani Grandal plays poker: Max talks about Grandal’s frustrating time as Dodger and the riddle of Yasmani Grandal’s splits. Yaz gets fewer locations in the area, but that doesn’t contribute to a massive walk rate which is likely unsustainable. Max envisions Grandal could approach batters with a no-swing mentality that deceives pitchers. Listen to the whole conversation.

June 10, 2021; Chicago; Chicago White Sox Seeker Yasmani Grandal gestures as he runs the basics after hitting a two-run homerun against the Toronto Blue Jays in the first inning at Guaranteed Rate Field.

  • Dodgers fans are like us: Max shares recent ups and downs with the Los Angeles Dodgers organization, including the start of the season with high expectations and love-hate relationships with managers.
  • MLB’s recent obsession with sticky stuff and juice balls: Two months after the start of the 2021 season, MLB decided to focus on using sticky substances. Max chats with the B’s about why this is an oversimplification of the problem and why now is less than ideal. In addition, this topic discusses the steroid witch hunt detailed in the Mitchell Report. Will this sticky stuff talk complicate players’ legacy?
