CLEVELAND, Ohio — Option 4 in our Mayfield Matrix series is probably the least likely — what if the Browns go ahead and sign Baker Mayfield to a short overtime? The model here is the three-year extension that Jacksonville somewhat unexpectedly gave Blake Bortles in February 2018 as he entered his fifth season. It showed faith in an inconsistent QB, even though the Jags had just played the AFC Championship game. It didn’t work long term. Bortles was benched in 5th grade and then let go.
But compared to letting Mayfield complete his fifth-year option in 2022, that would be a sign of faith.
Doug Lesmerises, Mary Kay Cabot, Scott Patsko, Dan Labbe and Ashley Bastock talk about this idea on the latest Orange and Brown Talk podcast.
