NSW COVID cases increase, Qld border closes at NSW hotspots, Victoria restrictions are relaxed, NSW red zones announced, NZ travel bubble with NSW on hiatus, Sun Yang banned from Games Tokyo Olympics in 2021

Prime Minister Scott Morrison today issued a message of support for NSW, saying he supports the new measures introduced by the Berejiklian government this morning to reduce the spread of COVID-19. He said the Commonwealth stood ready to provide any assistance requested.

The federal government will also introduce new supports – such as tests, protective gear, vaccinations and provisions for workers – at elderly care facilities in affected local government areas of Sydney.

“On the news from NSW today as the COVID-19 epidemic continues to spread,” Mr. Morrison wrote on Facebook.

“The next few days will be critical – it’s so important that everyone follows local health advice and adhere to the restrictions that have been put in place. We need to do everything we can to reduce the risk of further community transmission and eradicate this epidemic, which I know NSW will do.

“NSW has proven time and time again to be the gold standard when it comes to tracing contact, bringing any epidemic under control and making the right decisions for the people of NSW. I fully support the measures they have put in place today.

“It is also essential that Australians continue to be vaccinated, especially the most vulnerable. It will protect you, your family and the community and prevent you from getting seriously ill from this terrible virus. “
