Hobsons Bay has the highest rate of missed trash cans on collection day, report says

New data from Victoria’s local government has provided insight into the performance of local councils throughout 2020 and 2021.

The data gives boards a score out of 100 in each category.

When it comes to community satisfaction with the council making decisions in the best interest of the community, Maribyrnong City topped the list with a score of 69, barely beaten by Monash City with a score of 71. .

Hepburn Shire was at the bottom of the list, scoring just 44 points, followed by South Gippsland Shire (46) and Macedon Ranges Shire (47).

The data also revealed that Hobsons Bay had the highest rate of missed trash cans on garbage collection day, missing 22.04 trash cans per 10,000 scheduled curbside collections.

The data set suggests this is due to the board’s establishment of a food and green waste service, whose collection schedule has been changed several times over the past year.

The food and green waste bin was initially to be collected weekly, forcing ordinary garbage to be picked up every fortnight.

However, after a few complaints from residents, the garbage collection went back to a week and the green bin was pushed back to a fortnight.

Hindmarsh Shire was the top performer in this category, missing just two bins in 2020 and 2021, up from 14 the year before.

When it comes to community satisfaction with the council’s public consultation and engagement efforts, Maribyrnong again did well, receiving a score of 70.

Monash City also received a score of 70, followed closely by Wyndham City, with a score of 69.2.

The councils were also rated out of ten for socio-economic disadvantage of the municipality, with Brimbank receiving a score of one, making it the third most disadvantaged municipality in Victoria.
