Dawes Announces New Album, Free Full Concert Movie Stream, and Tour Dates; share the first song

Acclaimed Los Angeles Rockers Dawes share their epic new single, “Someone Else’s Café / Doomscroller Tries to Relax”, available now via Rounder Records on all DSPs and streaming services. An official music video is also available today via YouTube.

“Someone Else’s Café/Doomscroller Tries to Relax” marks the opening track of Dawes’ upcoming eighth studio album, MISADVENTURES OF DOOMSCROLLER, which will arrive everywhere Friday, July 22. Pre-orders are available now.

The first half of this song could be about bullies,” says Dawes frontman Taylor Goldsmith. “But it could also be anyone who thinks a little more control will make it all better. The second half is a response to that developing reality of the first half. The world can sometimes be a scary place but, in to some degree, I want to believe that I can decide how I respond to them.

“Every time a take was done it felt like a major accomplishment. Being 10 minutes really upped the ante. I didn’t want to be the guy to ruin minute 7 or 8 with everyone playing perfectly up to this point. This whole album, and this song in particular, felt a bit out of our comfort zone for us and I’m really proud of what it’s done to the music. I like to think that you can hear eye contact, that you can hear us thinking on our feet. It’s already become a top 5 to play live. Glad to finally have it released to the world.”

Produced by longtime collaborator Jonathan Wilson (Billy Strings, Father John Misty, Angel Olsen), MISADVENTURES OF DOOMSCROLLER represents an adventurous new turn for Dawes, demonstrating a more ambitious and exploratory approach to recording than ever before.

We’ve always prided ourselves on being minimalist. With this record, we decided to be MAXIMALISTS,” says Goldsmith. “Always a quartet. Still don’t let these songs hide behind tricks or effects. But really let the songs breathe and stretch and live as they want. We have decided to drop short attention spans. Our ambitions go beyond the musical with this one.

“We also wanted to respect the traditional length of a vinyl record – 40-45 minutes – but without considering the number of tracks. Like Miles or Herbie often did. Documenting the songs is only half the picture. For this record they are also the platform that we can jump off and get lost in. I think the best way to put it is – we wanted this record to be less of a collection of songs and more of a collection of music .”

“We wanted musical drama, an ensemble cast with linked arms kicking high; a transcript of a band meeting that we haven’t even had yet,” adds bassist Wylie Gelber. “Eight legs and eight arms, in one piece, reaching deeper than we ever imagined…Intros have Outros. Outros have bridges.”

A concert film of the band’s full album performing MISADVENTURES OF DOOMSCROLLER recorded at EastWest Studios in Los Angeles, Calif., will be available for free from today at 12:30 p.m. ET until this Sunday, May 8 at midnight ET. The audio was produced by Jonathan Wilson and the film was directed by Caitlin Gerard. It will be retired at midnight ET on Sunday, but the version of “Someone Else’s Café / Doomscroller Trys to Relax” will remain. The following songs from the movie will be reposted up until the album release date.

Dawes will mark the arrival of MISADVENTURES OF DOOMSCROLLER with an extensive international live schedule, including headline shows, festival performances and a summer tour with The Head and The Heart. Highlights include a very special Independence Day event with Phil Lesh & Friends, scheduled for Monday, July 4 at Asbury Park, NJ’s Stone Pony summer scene. Additional dates will be announced.
