Closure of the 2021 census website this week – last chance to complete the census: Australia

The 2021 Census website, including the online form, and customer service channels will close on Friday, October 1, marking an important milestone in the process of collecting census data for the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Australian statistician Dr David Gruen said: “The website and online form have been available since July 28 but will be closed soon. Now is your last chance to submit your census form.

“Households that have not completed the census must do so this week. Online forms can be submitted until Friday, October 1 at 3:00 p.m. AEST. If you don’t have your census letter, you can go online and fill it out today. Select the option “Obtain a census number”.

“People who have not yet returned a completed paper form should do so today using the return envelope provided.”

As of Tuesday, September 28, more than 10 million households had completed the 2021 census.

“It’s a great result. Thank you to the millions of people across Australia who completed the census, ”said Dr Gruen.

“It is extremely important that everyone participates and well over 90 percent have already done so. But no community is too small to be counted, we want to make sure everyone is represented.

Under the Census and Statistics Act 1905, the census is compulsory. The Australian statistician can issue people with an instruction notice, which orders people in writing to complete the census, and fines can apply if the instruction notice is not followed.

The ABS will release a final response rate for the 2021 census with the first release of census data in June 2022.

Census data is used to inform important decisions about transport, schools, health care, infrastructure and businesses at community and national levels.
